Gift idea: The Illuminator’s Gift

I’ve only just started reading The Illuminator’s Gift by Alina Sayre and I’m already hooked. If you’re buying a treat for anyone aged 9-14 this year, take a good look at this indie novel.

True, I’m no expert with the fantasy genre and the gorgeous cover was a large part of my decision to buy, but I’m a big believer in reading a variety of fiction and was delighted to discover this winner of a Moonbeam Children’s Book Award. Early chapters have introduced spirited characters and vivid settings; even at this stage, protagonist Ellie is making me read past my bedtime.

Author Alina Sayre was kind enough to answer my questions around how writing fits with a busy life, one of the reasons I’m launching my 2017 Serenity Project:

1) How do you juggle life to fit in writing time?
Probably as precariously as every other writer. I’m thankful to work at my day job three days a week, so my “off” days really allow me the time and mental space to go deep into my writing. I find it’s hard to get into the creative groove when I don’t have enough time to really focus.

2) When you feel overwhelmed, what’s your favorite trick to unwind?
I have a whole bag of relaxing tricks 🙂 I’ve caught on to the adult coloring trend, which I’ve found to be a really a good way to tune out the busyness and just escape with the colors and an abstract pattern. I also like to knit (a conveniently portable relaxation technique), and am in the process of learning to crochet. And of course, there’s always my enormous stack of TBR books inviting me in!

3) What is one tradition you love about December?
I’ll be honest—I tend to find the flurry of November/December holidays, with all their social occasions and sugary treats, more than a little overwhelming. My favorite moments are when I can center down and celebrate the smaller, quieter things. My family and I make a day of choosing and decorating our Christmas tree just after Thanksgiving, and I enjoy that moment of quiet and warmth.

4) What does 2017 hold for you?
Does anyone ever really know in advance? 🙂 I’m working on the fourth and final book in my Voyages of the Legend series, and hope to see that released in 2017. And after that? The freedom, the mystery, the adventure! Who knows?

Thank you, Alina, for the insight into your writing life. I’m hurrying back to my reading corner to find out what happens next to Ellie.

Alina, it truly is my pleasure! This deserves to be in many stockings this year.
