25 Things to Do Instead of TV

I came up with this list during my year-long Serenity Project. My focus at the time was Intentional Rest and I noticed that, at the end of the day, the only thing most of us can summon the energy for is staring mindlessly at a screen. So here are 25 things you can do instead of TV, even when you think you’re too tired for anything else.

You can see the list below, or click to download a pdf copy of 25 Things To Do When You’re Too Tired For Anything Except TV. We don’t have to slump in front of the goggle-box every night and I’m sure you’ll think of many other options too.

25 Things to Do Instead of TV

These are divided into “alone” and “with others” but those definitions are clearly arbitrary:

Alone

  • Take a warm bath
  • Aromatherapy
  • Listen to an audiobook
  • Read (something light)
  • Knit, crochet or sew
  • Meditate or pray
  • Light a candle
  • Gentle stretching
  • Crossword puzzle, sudoku
  • Coloring
  • Send a note to a friend
  • Write in your journal
  • Mini manicure

With Others

  •  Make real hot chocolate
  • Cuddle a pet
  • Flick through favorite photos
  • Watch a TED talk
  • Go for a walk
  • Listen to soothing music
  • Do a jigsaw puzzle
  • Update a scrapbook
  • Call a forgotten friend
  • Stargazing
  • Light a fire
  • Plan a vacation

I’d love to hear your favorite ways to nourish your soul, and further suggestions for worthwhile things to do instead of TV.

Pauline, was listening to, or playing, music on that list? Sometimes when we’re too tired for anything except the telly, we listen to music–we have our digital music categorized in all sorts of ways, so maybe we’ll pick a genre, an artist or a year. I haven’t been doing too well in keeping myself in balance lately — will be working on that!

Jean, yes, music is indeed on the list and I’m delighted to “hear” that it’s already working for you!
