How to edit your Squarespace website

After I complete a custom Squarespace website for a client, around half the time, they are interested in learning how to make simple edits and updates on their own.

I fully support this! I want your website to be a living, breathing business tool, and I don’t want you to have to wait for my availability, whenever you’re making a change. Plus, if you’re blogging, that’s a perfect, repeatable process for you to learn.

However, although the Squarespace editor is generally straightforward and intuitive to use, I’ve noticed there are three main ways that my clients get tripped up when making their own edits. These pitfalls especially show up when a client gets excited about adding new pieces of content, but I also see it during simple text edits.

Knowing just these three things will make a huge difference to your confidence in working with your Squarespace website, and also in the experience that your site visitors have.

  • To see the editing grid, press G on your keyboard while you’re in edit mode

My top 3 tips for the Squarespace editor

  • If you’re editing a section using the (relatively new) Squarespace Fluid Engine editor, don’t overlap blocks unless that’s an intentional design decision. (Video timestamp: 00:23)

    • Use “G” on your keyboard to turn on the editing grid, and check the blue lines around each box don’t overlap

  • Watch for empty space that opens up while you’re editing, and tidy it up. (Video timestamp: 02:40)

    • This can either be a text box taking up too much space, or the whole vertical section height stretching beyond what’s needed

  • Always check mobile view! (Video timestamp: 06:28)

    • You can arrange Squarespace content blocks independently on mobile view, so always make sure you have a logical order here too

    • Be especially sure to check and adjust mobile view if you’ve added a new content block

Overall, the Squarespace editor is easy to use

Compared to other tools like WordPress, my clients consistently tell me that Squarespace is easier and more intuitive to use.

However, there is still a learning curve. Squarespace fluid engine is powerful, and good web design is a specific and nuanced skill. I’ve been working in Squarespace for hours every week, for several years, and you shouldn’t expect to become an expert overnight.

But, if you know about — and steer around — these three problems, you should see a big improvement in your comfort level and success when editing your website.
